Aerial photographer Russ Heinl, who has made a long career of shooting from helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft – including a seven year stint as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds’ photographer – finds his feet on solid ground a lot more these days now that he’s added an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to his arsenal.

On November 27, 2012 the Federal Aviation Administration issued the Grand Forks County (North Dakota) Sheriff’s Department a Certificate of Authorization (COA) permitting the operation of a Draganflyer small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) within the 16 counties located in northeastern North Dakota.

The Canadian Press recently published an article outlining how the RCMP is using the Draganflyer UAV helicopters to aid in their police investigations. As Jim Bronskill for the Canadian Press reports, the RCMP is eyeing the creation of a national fleet of small, drone like helicopters. The plan is to have the helicopter drones fitted with cameras to aid in gathering evidence, reconstructing traffic accidents, and assisting with search and rescue operations.
