I fly this beast since January. In ten months I crashed it only once. It prooved to be very reliable heli with some Align parts. If you type in Google "Gartt 800" you will find whole story of this project. Now I can do rainbows and tic-tocs with this 800.

I am not the only one. My friend Benji after reading my thread on Polish forum also built 800 based on Assault 700 kit. He also flown it for months without issues. Actually idea to stretch it to 800 was mine but Benji was first to maiden it with 800mm blades.

Idea was simple. Get cheap frame. Put $30 Align stretch kit including longer boom, TT and tail push rod.

I am using 4.2kW Gartt 700 motor and it is strong enough. Lately Gartt released stronger 4.5kW motor for just $50.

I was able to get this kit for $175 without canopy directly from Gartt. I ended up with four airframes. Two of them are now 800s and flying, one is flying with 700mm blades and one I keep in the box as a source of spare parts.

Those who said it is Chinese shiz were wrong. Actually NMB bearings used by Gartt are excellent.

To make this clone kit as good as Align you have to replace only swash plate and main gear.

In 800 I have more Align parts for piece of mind.

All is described in my earlier thread on HF. There you'll find photos, videos, whole story in details. In want to move my story from HF to HeliGods because I do appreciate your great attitude and open mindness.

Actually my thread on HF was second most often viewed thread in 800 electric subforum. Not many pilots wrote in my thread but many were following my story.

Greetings from Poland to all HeliGods "community".

I do not have any issues with this bird so probably this thread will be quite silent. If anything happens I will update and share my thoughts. I plan to fly it again tomorrow. Today weather is not nice. I love to fly it in strong winds but rain, cloudy and cold weather make me hesitate. Many hundreds of flights it already survived. I am quite confident it will survive next year.

My friend Benji with his 800:

      Simon thank you.

Please do not buy SK3! Get this one instead:
      http://www.rcchinamade.com/hf700-ne...s-motor-for-700-align-trex-rc-helicopter.html

Trust me. I had many SK3 700 motors. They have worse bearings, less power, get hot much faster. Gartt motor is far better, surprisingly also cheaper.

Now IMPORTANT info I learned regarding YEP and some receivers.

My colleague Kenobi had problems with Goblin 700. It was often loosing power at flight like this:

YEP requires 5V signal. Some new receivers provide 3V. Solution to his problem was very simple... signal booster.

      I have seen this one:
      http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8356__Turnigy_Rx_Servo_Signal_Booster_2_7v_5v_.html

I did not have this problem. I use FrSky HV receivers.

Regarding my day... I started flying those helis at 10:00 had one hour break at 3PM, me castle Danielus wanted to use my hand press for finishing rewound 450L motor, than went to another field and całe back home at 9 PM.

Generator is able to recharge lipos faster than I can use them. Probably 8 hours at field will requires only 4 hours of generator work. It means around 2 litres of gasoline. :)

Too late mate, I already have it, it's cheap so if the bearings die, I'll replace it with your suggested motor. I have a yep 180 on my 7s Rush, I had trouble configuring it, so I bought a 200 kosmik cool, then jeff solved the setup, and I am more than happy with it (kosmik still in the box). I also run full HV on the e6 powered by a straight in lipo 2s 8.4v), so signal should not be an issue.

You might try a drop of oil in the bearings every five flights or so, as with your scorpion, it may help prolong the bearing life who knows

      SAFETY ISSUE...

Over a year after maiden 800 lost tail rotor in flight.

It was more difficult emergency autorotation on throttle hold because piro started when heli was not level. I succeded twice:

To land it with no damage:

and to find lost tail rotor :) :

      Man this field is huge...

Conclusion: Gartt coppied old bad design of tail shaft. It can accept 600 tail hub but has weak point.

Use new design Align 700 hub and tail shaft, please to be sure it does not break in flight.

      Good:

      Bad:

$17 is worth piece if mind...

P.S. Actually I knew about this issues before I build my first Gartt. I warned Benji because he was pushing his Assault 800 pretty hard. He has new version from the beggining.

That's a tiny power generator. Awesome, is heavy?

Not really. According to manual 14kg but it feels more comfortable to carry than six pack of 2l CocaCola bottles.

800 is repaired... With new but "bad" design tail shaft temporary.

Is Gartt or HobbyKing going to provide you a refund?

Whats the Warrant-tee policy on this safety issue?

I was reporting safety issues directly to Gartt in the past. Alvin Lau Manager at Gartt was very helpful.

As a result Gartt improved at least two things:
      - thread on tail slider
      - swash plate is stronger now

They seem to listen to consumers.

I will write next email to Alvin Lau...

I wanted to order Gartt kit without DFC head and canopy... No problem, I got it.

Regarding Kontronik once my friend told me they offers lifetime warranty. I tired to help but did not find this info on their web page. I was not sarcastic.

Regarding free items... I got many Assault parts for free from Benji including complete DFC head. He prefered to use in his 800 classic FBL head.

Good news: "The newer Assault kits come with a 6mm shaft.":

Is it true gartt have now started delivering the tail shaft without the step on it? Can't find confirmation on this anywhere.
I'm not sure it's an issue on the 700 size but may be different when swinging larger tail blades for the 800

Looks like the info on the tail shaft was incorrect, shame as I was looking to order some, will look to the align shaft when the time comes for replacement.

If I stay to sleep in the field one night, the following nights I'll have to sleep: a) in the couch b) again in the field, c) park bench

In 700 and 800 I use the same cheap $7 CF tail blades. At least I do not have tail hum.

I am pretty sure this is related to vibrations of rig id CF tail blades and stiff alu tail grips. We can try to put old 600 plastic tail grips or use plastic tail blades provide with kit (I do not like them much because they are heavy comparing to CF). Plastic tail blades probably absorb vibes better.

I did not bother to balance tail blades (I never do) so this also can matter. Now I started to use precise 0,01g scale just to compare weight of tail blades.

I did not feel discomfort flying 800 at night with "bad" shaft. I just keep it far from people.

      3D setup with not fuselage

After over 80 or so flights I am really happy. The motor and ESC have survived 14S. I still get gear wear but I get the feeling it's something to do with the headspeed of 2300rpm or the governor is very very aggresive. So here's my question on the governor on the YEP 120A:

Should I lower the governor gains so that there is some delay or should I get the governor to go through the KBAR FBL unit (I have rpm sensors)?
I do not want to lower the head speed.

I flew the same heli on 12S for almost 2 years on the same align gear with little gear wear. As soon as I switched to 14S - I have lost 2 gears on this 3D and 2 on the Speed unit. Also - I have had to strengthen the frame because the motor has already scratched the bearing blocks (flex or possibly loose motor mount - I checked the screws and they were loose after the last gear failure (4 of those screws were loose and one of the pinion screws was also loose).

      Bird2:

Speed setup on 14S with 710mm RJX Blades

HK got these back in stock:

      http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__66589__RJX_High_Quality_Carbon_Fiber_Main_Blades_710mm_FBL.html

I have used these in the past and these are one of the the best/stiffest blades I have ever used. Also the 64mm width adds to the extra performance.

I flew these on the Speed unit at 2400rpm and lowered the pitch to max of 9Degrees and put smaller tail blades. Just as fast as it was with the 715mm blades but super stable and the battery consumption was also low - almost 20% extra left compared to the 715mm Revolutions (these flexed a lot compared to the RJX).

      I'll post some video's soon.

BTW - HK's overnight shipping from HK is now offering DHL/Fedex/UPS to USA."

I received from rcpioneer stronger tail shafts and replaced them in all my Gartt helis.
