So what is a HOVER SMAK? The definition was created on the weekend at MRCHC while Sean was trying out his new heli.

    HOVER SMAK - DEFINITION:
When a 3d smak pilot finishes his new expensive helicopter build and vows that he is only going to take it easy for the maiden test flight.

After spool up and a 2-second initial hover, the 3d pilot cannot contain himself and starts to do all stupid shiz that basically puts the new build in precarious danger.

If the HOVER SMAK is successful a huge grin is stuck to the pilots face for at least a couple of days. If the HOVER SMAK is not successful the pilot must endure a barrage of laughs for at least a couple of days.

I`m soooo guilty of that. I lift off, do a few stationary pirouettes...and get to it. I only do that with the electrics though. With the nitro helicopters, and a new engine, I take it easy for two or three tanks of fuel before I start to work them over. BTW, the cover photo for this thread is my former team mate from TSA Model. We were doing our power hour demos at IRCHA 2013, and he dug the tail blades into the ground...breaking the tail gears. Although the helicopter did hit him, it had no head speed when it made contact. One of the blade tips gouged his lower back but no lasting damage. I was standing next to the photographer, to his left when it happened, and it scared the heck out of all of us.

Really @Geena! The RC Helicopter world is a small place, what a coincidence! I bet everyone though his number was up. But yes Hover Smaks.... I think more common that what people think!

Yes, we all thought he had bought the farm, but he did a great job of getting the head speed bled off before it got to him. I agree....hover smacks happen all the time. I have 100% confidence in my builds and set ups, and I never....EVER fly close to myself. So I have no problem with going to guns on the maiden, after a bit of hovering to feel it out. That`s the one thing I don`t like about new nitro engines. Having to take it easy for the first few tanks...LOL I want to go!

Sometimes you don't even get to a hover before the smack. Last year I had finished a rebuild, thought I'd got everything set up correctly and preocceded to start a hover. Had a thought to check alleron and gave a small input which the CGY decided it should correct and before you know it the heli was smacking around on the ground ripping itself apart. Note to self. Check flybarless unit is correcting properly before spool up. And further still have someone else check it also...

Yes preflight check - a thourough one before a hover (smak) is really a good idea. I try to get an expeienced pilot to go over my heli before its first flight after a rebuild.

Thorough preflight checks are always a good idea, whether it`s the maiden flight or the 1000th flight of the helicopter. Before every flight, I go over the entire helicopter from end to end, and check everything. Some of the guys I fly with say I`m going a bit too far with it. But am I really? One cracked ball link could spell out disaster in the blink of an eye, and a simple preflight can avoid a very bad situation. I try not to be, and don`t want to be labeled as a safety nazi...but I also don`t want to hurt anyone either.

I would never charge for doing an inspection for someone. I`m happy to do them for anyone who asks me to do it. For the past few years, I have been assisting with builds and doing complete builds for guys who are doing a first build, or just want someone there to make sure they are doing a proper job.

Hover Smak is like the dark side, there is no sense in fighting it... Only Yoda, and Obi wan can fight it, the rest of us are just drawn to it!

FBL units have been known to glitch. Occasionally, mine looses rudder at power up and I have to restart. It's put me in the habit of thorough pre-flight checks.

Never had that happen....unless one of the plankers shakes my table as I power on. I just give them "the look" and they back up so I can restart...lol. I also make a strict habit of checking the sensor directions every single time I power on.

It's a K-Bar..... which probably explains that problem. I'm dead set on getting my hands on a real V-Bar or Ikon next.

Totally agree. One of the guys I fly with at our local club uses CGY750s on his helicopters, and he loves them. One thing he pointed out me about them, is the governor is rock solid.

Yes @Geena and i can vouch for the "feel" of the gyro - It used to be mainly a gyro for a loose flowing feel but since the latest upgrade it can be made to feel traditionally flowing or more vbar/robotic or anywhere inbetween. You can also speed up servos (for fast samk) or slow them down a bit for bigger helis... quite a few useful functions.
